This is great news (about Pac Biofules). I saw that they are still adversiting the prices, etc. so figured they were still selling it (have yet to go check it out).

This may be a stupid question but where can one aquire WVO?

And where will the co-op be? Do they have a phone number or web site?

Thanks for all of your help!

I was told (and saw the other day) that Pac Biofuels (on Ocean) are open again... (for now).
There is also a new Biod co-op starting here in Santa Cruz. Doesn't seem to have an unlimited capacity and the members will still need to acquire their own WVO to be dropped off @ coop and they process for you, but it's a start.

Your VW's fuel lines are fine for running BD. Supposedly, they come standard w/ BD-safe fuel lines. It still might be a good idea to replace them with Viton if & when finances allow... but everyone seems to agree that they won't dissolve like the stock rubber lines found in other cars.

Obviously, Biodiesel is a new and unstable resource...
- USA Gas on Soquel Ave used to sell B99 and now it's B5 (they say they can't sell over B5 anymore at all)
- Pacific Biofuels has shown themselves to not be a reliable source
- Mountain Feed Supply in Ben Lomond no longer sells BD.
- ASTM standards cannot be upheld since feedstock and sources vary greatly.

So being that it's not always available, I resent people putting stickers on their cars that say "No War Required" or other self-righteous and preachy slogans... and calling their car "a Biodiesel".

If you're making your own Biodiesel and have a constant supply of WVO from restaurants, then by all means, cover your car in stickers... but if your conscience is subject to the availability of something that is so fluctuant, it's false advertising and hypocrisy.

I'm going to hopefully be part of the new Biodiesel coop here in Santa Cruz so I can run my truck on it until I get a WVO conversion kit. They will supposedly be charging $2.75-$3.00/gal for Bio and you bring your own WVO. I get plenty of WVO so for me that seems like a pretty fair deal. And they won't be adjusting their prices everytime petro-diesel prices change... therefore, it will *actually* be independent of foreign oil instead of pretending for eco-glamour's sake.

I stand corrected! The one place selling it in SCruz now is only selling B5 (!). So the closest is now in Campbell as Mountain Feed and Farm supply, as you pointed out, is not selling it any more.

WTF??? I cannot believe that we live where we do and there are NO OPTIONS AT ALL! That's horrible.

What is the other option for B99 aside from Pacific Biofuel, or whatever the new name is now? I called Ben Lomond feed & seed a couple weeks back and they told me they no longer carry it.

Thanks Kurian!!! And yeah, I plan to pick Todd's brain -- tonight even!

I read the Biofuel Oasis stuff earlier today and will get a fuel filter ASAP and that Stanadyne fuel conditioner for when I can't use biofuel (and I'll keep a bottle and a fileter in my car at all times). I am waiting for the regular diesel fuel in my tank to get as low as possible before I fill up on biofuel so that I know what's in there! By then I'll have learned to change the filter -- either locally or from Todd or Biofuel Oasis (trip to Berekley may be in order!).

Here in SCruz we now have another biofuel option! And I work in Scotts Valley so I can cruise to Ben Lomond no problemo.

I'll call Biofuel Oasis right now about the hoses!

And I know that the people I bought the car from in Portland ran it on biodiesel whenever possible.

YAY!

> What to I need to do, if anything special, to do this?

Nuttin, honey. Just buy a spare fuel filter, keep it in the car, and learn how to change it in case you ever start sputtering while out on the road. (Happened to me once, I was back on the road in less than 10 mins.) Then find a reliable source for bio. Sounds like retail outlets are in flux on your side of the hill.

At some point fairly soon (like within the next six months), you should probably figure out whether the 2003 might need it's fuel hoses replaced with Viton hose, but I expect you'll find it's not necessary. You can call the greasemonkeyettes at the Biofuel Oasis for specifics on your year if you have any trouble finding the details on your own. 510 665 5509

> Can I go back and forth beetween regualr and bio diesel if necessary?

Yep. But with a caveat. Read here for the details (Scroll halfway down the page to the section on "Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Warning"): http://www.biofueloasis.com/html/basics.html

Their suggestion that you keep a bottle of fuel conditioner on hand for instances where you have to use petro is a good one. As is their endorsement of Stanadyne's product. Lubricity is good. Very good. Like we didn't already know that...

Any more impertinent q's, just call Todd directly. He knows all. ;)

Oh, and congratulations! You're gonna love driving again. Amazing how much better it feels to smell something delicious cooking and realize it's your car! Sure beats petro exhaust stench all to hell.
