Re: the myth about OIL
Mon, October 27, 2008 - 12:44 PMArgh.
I commend you for your effort, but isn't the idea of growing crops for fuel alcohol a net loser overall? Sure methanol and ethanol burn cleaner than gasoline. But that doesn't make them a net-zero carbon emission source. Unlike some oilseed crops like jatropha which apparently ARE a net zero proposition.
The main bummer I foresee with any large-scale migration to alcohol fuel is that the mass production of high-starch crops to produce fuel for the current "installed base" fleet of domestic automobiles and trucks would require a massive INCREASE in the already-atrocious monoculture of corn and soy, which are both GMO and agrichemical intensive. IOW, the same players, playing the same game.
Sure, building a still in your backyard isn't all that different from backyard biodiesel processor (albeit a little more dangerous), but promoting either of these approaches as solutions to climate change or the corporate monopoly of energy seems short-sighted. And what would the feedstock be for a burgeoning population of stills? Grass clippings? Firewood? Seems like this would be a non-starter for all but rural practitioners.
